Jakwob - Fade (Etherwood VIP)

We've been falling a bit behind on posts here lately, with a particular lack of DnB in recent weeks. Luckily to make up for it we've got Etherwood's smooth liquid remix of 'Fade' by Jakwob.
Etherwood keeps the best parts of the original intact with the beautiful piano work and Maiday's excellent vocals shining bright. The tempo on the other hand get's turned up to around the 170 mark, whilst a little eastern inspired flute and a subtle layer of sub-bass wobble are added to throughly compliment the new mix.
It's not a new direction, just a tactile drift down an alternate route to the same end, in other words; remix execution at it's finest.

Doorly ft. Soraya Vivian – Rush

With his earlier 'Pigeonhole This?!' releases, Doorly basically already proved that he's electronic music's jack of all trades, there's seriously nothing this man can't do. It should come as no surprise then that having now turned his hand to House music, the man is absoloutely killing it.
His latest release 'Rush' takes everything that ever hit raw and hard with that classic 90s House sound; euphoric piano leads, Soraya Vivian's soulful vocals, and a deep bassline groove, all complemented by that melodic organ lead. The release comes complete with a plethora of big remixes; highlights including Rail & Priors' sublime DnB effort, as well as Problem Child's 2-step/Bass fest.
All in all 'Rush' is one hell of a release with original mix and remixes alike already on every decent DJ's rinse list. Thanks to some serious generosity from Mad Decent, the whole release is available for FREE download here, so grab it now before they change their minds.

Artist Recordings - Summer Vibes LP

We've waited patiently for this one and though the best of summer may already be long behind us, Artist Recordings latest LP has finally arrived.
The sixteen track LP covers a delivers a broad spectrum of vibrant Drum & Bass tunes, with the kind of high production values we've come to expect from the label. Though the LP is hardly 'one-sided', it could be said that the majority of tracks lean more toward the 'Liquid' end of DnB (and even Dubstep; see Subranger's 'Underwater' VIP). This is of course by no means a bad thing as the resultingly melodic and soulful tracks fit perfectly with the tone of the LP's 'Summer Vibes' distinction and moreover, there's still plenty of deep bass and euphoric peaks to keep the 'Jump-Up' ravers happy. Naturally as with most Artist Recordings releases, there's a real plethora of talent on show here, with the release's chilled out, mellow contributions coming from the likes of Slogun & iOh, Inflex and Colossus, while Command Strange, Moleman, Intelligent Mannors, Genetic Bros, Rameses B and Maduk are on board to provide the bass filled rollers and dancefloor oriented synth leads. Our personal stand-out track in this regard is Slogun & iOh's 'Be With You', although it's satisfyingly deep bass rolls and souful vibes are also very nearly matched by Colossus' excellent 'Longer Lasting'.
We could go on, but frankly this album speaks for itself and being a very generous FREE release from Artist Recordings, this really should be an instant and welcome addition to anyone's music library.

DJ Honda & Mos Def - Travellin Man (DnB bootleg)

Production wizard Atlantic Connection has just recently made his previously unreleased bootleg of 'Travellin Man' available for FREE download. Originally created in 2002, with Mos Def on the mic and that DJ Honda touch still all over the bootleg beat, there's really nothing not to like in this slice of jazzy liquid heaven. Breeze Block & Skyro - Spectrum

This FREE DnB track comes courtesy of DNBR. Breeze Block & Skyro's 'Spectrum' is a synth heavy roller that lies more on the liquid/pop side of Drum & Bass.....think Danny Byrd and that new Hospital Records sound. This is of course by no means a bad thing, although the radio friendly accessibility of the track my put some off at first. However given a few listens, 'Spectrum' is undoubtedly a solid tune, well deserving of the support its receiving from the likes of Liquicity and Radio 1Xtra.

Sub Zero - Spin Doc (2012 Remix)

Things are mega busy right now, hence the slight reduction in posting. However, we've always got time for Drum & Bass.....especially FREE Drum & Bass.
Most DnB heads will already be familiar with Sub Zero and the original 'Spin Doctor' track. This fresh remix for 2012 retains all the hard hitting impact of the original and is as dark and aggressive as we'd expect from anything off the Playaz/Ganja labels.

Breakshift - Aurora Nova

It's one uncharacteristically scorching Saturday here in the UK and I know what you're all thinking...we could really go for some sweet FREE DnB right now. Fortunately, Dublin's production duo, Breakshift have come to our rescue with 'Aurora Nova', an out-of-this-world track....complete with transcendent synths, deep bass and smooth liquid vibes.

E-Motion Records - FreeMotion EP

When we get a bit of DnB here at The HotBox, it's always a pleasure, especially when it's FREE. However, Birmingham's E-Motion Records have changed the game by giving out a whole EP, in exchange for a 'like' on Facebook. The 4 track 'FreeMotion' EP opens with the dark vibes of Karma's 'Last Man Standing'. Heavy on the bass and the breaks, this track has a real classic DnB feel which continues on in the reese bass of D.Side's 'Sour Mash VIP'. By track 3 however, the EP starts to mellow out with Colossus' 'Estcourt', our personal stand out track, if only for the Commodores sample. D.Side then rounds off the EP with 'See You VIP', restoring the EPs opening dark vibes and deep bass focus.

Changing Faces - Reasons To Be Happy EP

The much anticipated 'Reasons To Be Happy' FREE EP from our favourite Slovakian Drum & Bass producer, Changing Faces, was finally released this week. As promised, the 7-track EP delivers a beautiful collection of crisp, high quality Liquid DnB productions with the likes of Sheffield's Roebuck and Synth (winner of the remix competition) also contributing.
Although the standard is high, the end product here is far more evolutionary than revolutionary and those expecting this EP to 'reinvent' the Liquid genre will be sorely disappointed. Instead, each track here provides a perfect example of solid production techniques and by-the-numbers liquid. Naturally this is no bad thing and accordingly the 'Reasons To Be Happy' would be a welcome edition to the library of any Liquid fan or budding DnB DJ. Though it was no easy choice, given the sheer quality on offer here, we've selected 'Without You' feat. Roebuck as our overall stand-out track. Here the smooth rolling bassline and upbeat vibes are sure to put a smile on anyones' face, with the overall production style comparable to that of Netsky or even Danny Byrd.
Altogether then, the quality on offer in this EP absolutely warrants a download, especially given the generous FREE price tag. If this EP is anything to go by, Changing Faces has a really bright future ahead of him and is without a doubt one to keep an eye on....

Roebuck - 52

Soundcloud really is an excellent resource, with a little bit of searching here and word of mouth there, you can stumble onto absolute gems. Gems like DnB producer Roebuck and his track '52'.
This Sheffield native may be young, but you wouldn't know it from his mature and accomplished production style. '52' is a proper masterclass in Liquid DnB, with meticulous percussive arrangement, a smooth, jazzy melody and deep, rich bass...all wrapped up in an impeccable master.
You can't really ask for much more, especially when Roebuck is offering the track for FREE here.

Synthetic Epiphany - Survive EP

We've been waiting along time for this and now it's finally here. Ever since Synthetic Epiphany aka Marcus Levy-Chance started releasing his material via Soundcloud, this EP release has been eagerly anticipated, not that this is by any means his full release, but it may be his most accomplished and seasoned to date....and one that we have certainly been waiting for.
The 'Survive' EP is the culmination of that waiting, a collection of highly atmospheric and emotional tracks, arranged around 2step and half time rhythms. You might call it chillstep, burialstep or even future garage, either way this is easily some of the most beautiful and intelligent music that you'll hear this year. Each track is sonically unique in it's own delivery and message, yet they are able seamlessly blend together creating ambient and dreamlike soundscapes...this certainly the kind of EP you'll want to close your eyes to and experience all at once. The stand out track in this regard is 'Breathe' (170bpm edit), whose drum and bass energy sets it apart from the otherwise downtempo feel of the EP, however not in a jarring sense, but rather distinguishing the track as the climatic release of the energy that steadily builds throughout the EP.
The whole EP is available for FREE via Bandcamp as part of Synthetic Epiphany's 'Pay what you want' ethos, but don't make the mistake of taking this as his way of gauging the value of his music, rather this is an EP for everyone, those that can afford and those that can't. Nevertheless 'Survive' is excellent release and a must download for electronic music fans, listen below and see for yourself.

Good Friday Mix

The decks have come back from the grave...today of all days, so what could be more appropriate than some DnB!
