Taches - Stockhausen / Altona

I'l keep this one short and sweet, since its boxing day and we've all got plenty of drinking to do.
Senegal's Tåches has sent us over two more smooth, souful and unorthodox electronic tracks, dancing around somewhere in the 'Future Bass' catagory. Regardless of genre, the first, 'Stockhausen' is a poweful track with perfect vocal sample that rolls and builds the emotion throughout, until its anti-climatic ending. It certainly warrants the time to listen, it's only fault being that you'll wish it was longer.
Meanwhile 'Altona' seems to lean more on the R&B side of things starting with birdsong and an overt Mary J Blige sample but quickly turning on its side with the production borrowing elements of spaced out Trap to create something that sounds like the result of a Weekend/Space Ghost Purp collab. Whatever it is, its solid production and deep vibes have got us all excited. With each subsequent production we're certain Taches has got some serious talent, definitely one to keep an eye in 2013.

Synthetic Epiphany - Thunderous

If  you're a regular reader, then you'll already be very aware of  British producer Synthetic Epiphany and his consistently solid releases. Though he's no stranger to the broad horizons of electronic music, having contributed to genres all the way from the most obscure minimal ambiance, right to accessible 4x4 House, it seems like he's heading back to his dubstep roots with 'Thunderous'. The track enchants from the offset with a soothing chillstep opening that quickly begins to show it's darker side, before eventually descending into the track's chaotic and aggressive final third. All the way through however, the track remains consistently melodic and captivating, never forgetting the 'dub' roots of dubstep and carefully avoiding the common current mistake of LFO over-usage and garbage 'bro-step' synths.
Fans of that original UK sound will love the depth and breadth that Synthetic Epiphany brings here to a genre that to many is already long beaten to death (dubstep is dead....love live dubstep). Dubstep debate aside, 'Thunderous' stands out as yet another high quality production from a producer we've come to expect nothing less from.

Buraka Som Sistema - Hangover (Maxx Baer Remix)

I'm still not sure where I stand on the whole 'Trap Music' movement that's increasingly gaining traction these days. It seems to be a genre of extremes; when it's bad...dear god it's bad, but when it's good....it goes as hard and vibey as a motherfucker. Nevertheless, it's an exciting and ever growing sub-genre that refuses to be ignored.
Most recently it's Maxx Baer's (formerly FoxClub) remix of Buraka Som Sistema's 'Hangover', a big vibrant instrumental track that packs a real punch of southern hospitality.

Adele - Rolling In The Deep (1963 Remix)

There's something beautifully chaotic about stumbling on to a piece of music like this, especially since the track's erractic structure seems to reflect the manner in which I found it...perhaps i'm delving too deep, who knows, it's a Friday.
The point is 1963's remix of 'Rolling In The Deep' isn't your typical rhythm refix or vocal sampling bass infusion, it goes much deeper than that. The French producer has wiped his hands of the original track, choosing instead to start from scratch, building it piece by piece from the ground up to create a truly unique and astounding audio experience. It's glitchy, it's deep and there's elements of bass music, trap, pop and even R&B scattered throughout with complete abandon, creating something that is altogther...something else. I can't and won't try to catagorise this track, rather I'll simply recommend that you listen yourself below. It's not the most accesible track, but give it the time it needs to sink in, let it wash over you. You'll soon be as glad as we are that you came across 1963.

Isadora - On The Rights

It feels like it's been an age since we were sent any indie music worth writing about, so it was a geniune thrill to hear a band as stimulating as Isadora.
On the immediate 'press packet' surface you'd be forgiven for thinking Isadora was simply more of the same; the story of the duo, that became a 5 piece band, an all Brooklyn tour calendar and a quirky - central protagonist based music video. It's all there and while it's always tempting to simply judge, slap on a badge and move on, there's actually something a little unusual going in there first single that warrants a little more time. It may take a few listens, but there's a truly intrigiuing side to there debut release 'On The Rights'.
The single opens with a certain apathy which jars against the melodic and aggressively jaded  vocals and occasional guitar laden stabs scattered from beginning to end. It builds and then breaks off, it takes you by the hand, but never really leads you anywhere, almost as if the song is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and desperately trying to hide it. It's and interesting sound and extremely hard to place, almost as if The Smashing Pumpkins decided to merge with Dinosaur Bones...well perhaps that's a stretch.  Quite simply it's strange and stranger still the song was premiered recently by Interview Magazine before the band had even played their first gig.  Nevertheless, the important thing is that 'On The Rights' is a captivating piece of music, whether it's simpy because of the 'strange' factor or something deeper is irrelevant at this point, rather it's got me thinking and that's what's really interesting.
Check out Isadora's 'On The Rights' below and grab the FREE download here.
Note: even the band's own mp3 download has their name as The Yes Way. Not often that band makes their debut whilst still between names, with that kind of chaos at heart there guys might just go on to be the greatest band ever.

Chill Bump - The Loop EP

French Hip-Hop duo Chill Bump have had a firm place on our radar ever since we covered 'Back To The Grain', one of their first EP releases and the record that really established their thoroughbred, 'DIY' Hip-Hop sound.
Now with their 4th EP release 'The Loop', producer Bankal and MC Miscellanious are looking to take things a little deeper, reflecting on their style, their hard work and and the growing success and acclaim that has come with each subsequent past release.
The pair waste no time, opening the EP with 'The Eponym', an introspective track in which Miscellanious dwells both on personal journey towards life as an artist and the growth of Chill Bump as an artistic and musical partnership. It's a sharply analytical track that flows with pride at the gratifying pay off of several years hard work, as well as the gratitude the pair feel to fans and journalists alike. It's an 'attention grabber' as Bankal's sharp vocal samples point out, a great opening and lead into the next track, 'Just a Sample'.

Straight away the second track's title harks back to the 'The Loop' EP as a whole, with Miscellanious remarking on the simplicity of finding success in Hip-Hop, the power and the limitations of what basically amounts to little more than ever-repeating audio loops or samples and the apathy that comes with the revelation of the music industry as a seemingly corresponding loop of money, success and disposable art/artists. Though the tone dips a little towards melancholy here, overall this is a track that swells with ego and pride, though perhaps replacing the optimism you'd expect with a certain future doubt. This feeling of uncertainty rolls over into 'Home Sweet Home', a track obsessed with dreaded things yet to come; the lows that will surely follow the highs, that same destructive power of success that has consumed many an artist before them. Chill Bump are slowly climbing their way to the top of a mountain of fame and fortune, but all they can see is the steep drop on the way down. However, despite the tone, this is yet another track that oozes confidence both through Bankal faultless production and Miscellanious' razor-sharp delivery. In this sense the whole album is somewhat of a musical and contextual oxymoron; the highest point of a commercial career, yet with all inspiration rooted in the fear of future failure and disappointment....
After all this deep introspection it's about that time for a breather in the form of the aptly named 'Pointerlude', a minute and fifty-two seconds of poignant instrumental and just enough time to let everything previous sink in.
From this point on contemplation and doubt are thrown aside in favor of confidence and good old fashioned balls as MC Miscellanious tears up  'Just a Sample pt.2' with all the aggression and lyrical force we've come to expect from him. He chooses to survive in the face of commercial failure and mortality,  boldly declaring, 'defy death and die with no regrets'. In one fell swoop, the duo have swept melancholy aside and chosen to embrace to the fear, the chaos and destruction, driving onward into the final track, 'Self Destrukt', a thought out and fearless closer complete with a primed Kool G Rap sample that confidently links the duo with one of Hip-Hop's greats...and, in my mind, deservedly so.
Altogether 'The Loop' is a journey, a reflection on creation, success and failure, and just the kind of poetic brilliance we've come to expect from Chill Bump. The French duo have been working towards this release for some time and it seems like the hard work and dedication has truly payed off in what is their most accomplished and emotionally open work to date. Although this might not be their most accessible release, it's certainly a sign of the pair's ever increasing creativity maturity and most likely of more future success to come.
'The Loop' EP is, as with each previous Chill Bump release, is available for FREE or Name Your Price download via Bandcamp.

Doorly ft. Soraya Vivian – Rush

With his earlier 'Pigeonhole This?!' releases, Doorly basically already proved that he's electronic music's jack of all trades, there's seriously nothing this man can't do. It should come as no surprise then that having now turned his hand to House music, the man is absoloutely killing it.
His latest release 'Rush' takes everything that ever hit raw and hard with that classic 90s House sound; euphoric piano leads, Soraya Vivian's soulful vocals, and a deep bassline groove, all complemented by that melodic organ lead. The release comes complete with a plethora of big remixes; highlights including Rail & Priors' sublime DnB effort, as well as Problem Child's 2-step/Bass fest.
All in all 'Rush' is one hell of a release with original mix and remixes alike already on every decent DJ's rinse list. Thanks to some serious generosity from Mad Decent, the whole release is available for FREE download here, so grab it now before they change their minds.

Bailey - C'est Un Oui / Run

Just recently we posted up a remix by Brighton based House and Garage producer Bailey. Since then Bailey has been hard at work, with two brand new production already hot of the presses;
'C'est Un Oui' is a 4x4 oriented track with what many a calling that 'Bristol' vibe. Expect sexy pitched vocals, prominent 808 drum samples and plenty of deep loved up grooves. Call it what you like, this is exactly the kind of thing that gets us up and moving.
'Run' turns the pace up a notch, still falling into that House 4x4 rhythm, but this time with more emphasis on the strong leading synth melodies and completing vocal. Though there's less of a groove factor in comparison to 'C'est Un Oui', there's certainly just as much euphoric energy and emotion.
There's always a somewhat pointless, yet inevitable urge to compare such different tracks when released simultaneously.  Regardless, the point to be taken is that there's clearly something here for everyone, whether its the Bristol House/Future Bass crowd or the more Tech/Progressive. If you like your House, then Bailey has got the kind of range to please all.
Both tracks are available for FREE download, so grab 'C'est Un Oui' here and 'Run' here

Enk Collective - EnkTape Vol.1

You might remember The Enk Collective as the UK bass community behind artists like The D.A who's remix was featured some weeks back. The guys have since got in touch to share their first mixtape 'EnkTape Vol.1', a dub/bass oriented album with  live dub reggae from General Roots and Flatline, grime/moombahton tunes from Rinse Fm's Sypro and Dubloke, Future Bass/House oriented tunes from  DrDr, Rendar & Leebo and  even some smooth RnB from Fortay.
Throughout the first half of the mixtape, the Jamaican/London influences are strong and you can expect to hear plenty of deep frequencies and classic dub instrument-reverb. Ironically however,  the efforts from the seasoned General Roots band generally come off as the weakest here with 'Stop & Search' sounding a little hollow and 'Green Xmas,' being an amusing yet ultimately unfulfilling track. The same can be said of Sir Spyro's grimed out instrumental dub 'Fox', which is as much a fond reminder of grime's brief domination of the London scene, as it is under-produced and somewhat flimsy, at the very least in need of a solid remastering.
On the other hand, the two Flatline tracks come across as highly accomplished and well produced Reggae/Dub instrumentals, exactly the kind of thing you'll want to sit and smoke to, you simply just can't fault that kind of effectiveness. Likewise Dubloke's 'Spray Can' maintains the high production standard, even if the dancehall/moombahton vibes aren't your thing.
By track 7 things have taken an interesting and welcome House turn, starting with Fortay's light and grooved out electro remix of 'Crazy In Love' and then heading deeper with DrDr's 'Extra'. This is the 'Enktape Vol.1' at its most accessible, with DrDr's vocally lead production touching on 'Future Garage' rhythms whilst still holding the kind of 'Pop' appeal you'd find in many a Katy B track for example, by no means a bad thing and  indeed one of the mixtape's highlights.
Onto the tape's only RnB track and Fortay's second contribution, the reworking of Brandy's 'Getting Me Down'. This track really is a silky as they come, it won't be long before Fortay's slick production and Brandy's sultry vocals have you laying back and clearing your mind as all your troubles drift right to the back of you mind. Expect this one to start cropping up on your most played list soon.
At this point we turn to House again as Rendar & Leebo's 4x4 beats carry us home in 'Hyperspace' and 'Echo Base'. Though the former is the stronger of the two tracks and certainly the most uplifting, the deep end focus and spaced out feel of  'Echo Base' is certainly not without its charm and a well chosen wind-down to the end of the mixtape...incidentally both are arguably the stand out tracks alongside 'Getting Me Down', 'Extra' and 'Ream Dub'.
Altogether the mixtape is a real achievement and a promising start for the Enk Collective's ever growing talent roster. It's safe to say we've been critical here, but the fact is; these young talents have the potential to go bigger and better with each new release, and we just want to make sure they keep pushing to show us what they can really do.....watch this space for big things in 2013.

In the world of electronic music one's thing for sure, those Surrey Disclosure boys know just how to press my audio buttons, with 'Latch' easily being one favorite releases of 2012. Joey BADA$$ - 1999

2012 has been a decent year for Hip-Hop, with a new MF Doom album, plenty of mixtapes and even album releases from the likes of new boy Kendrick Lamar exceeding expectation. Meanwhile the underground has provided a steady stream of decent new artists like Blu, Chill Bump and Dee Brown....keeping things fresh and interesting for the future.
With this in mind, the latest new boys, Brooklyn's Joey BADA$$ and his Pro Era crew, have a lot a competition as Hip-Hop starts to gradually claw its way out of commercial hole it's been stuck in for the past 4 years. There's a lot resting on one little mixtape here, the long awaited revival of the East coast...and the good news is that Joey and Pro Era don't disappoint.
The naming is everything and with the '1999' mixtape the message is clear, bringing back that classic 90's 'boom bap' feel is the main objective here and it's achieved with flying colours. 'FromdaTomb$' and it's accompanying video was perhaps the first single release to really affirm the 90's revival being shot for here and there's a reason why it captured Hip-Hop fans globally, Chuck Stranger's tight production is reminiscient of the classic Crooklyn Dodgers sound while both Chuck and Joey deliver sharp lyrics with the veteran flow of many a rapper much their senior. Joey describes it as Hip-Hop without 'gimmicks', and although that's not entirely true, it's definitely music with substance well above its '90's/Golden Age motif'. What's more, it's the consistency that really shines through the mixtape, with each of the 15 tracks able to stand on their own and not a single filler in sight. Of course one of the biggest contributing factors at work here are the big name producers and borrowed productions behind each track, with the late J Dilla, MF Doom, Knxwledge and Lord Finesse all featuring, and although more has been repurposed than originally composed,  it's apparant that the Pro Era guys have some seriously good taste.
In a mixtape so consistent there are still highlights however; aside from the aforementioned 'FromdaTomb$'.....'World Domination', 'Waves' and 'Righteous Minds' are all perfect examples of top notch production meeting intelligent, and flawlessly delivered lyrics. Apart from the few borrowed beats there's really nothing to fault here and although it's probably better to judge an album on it's merits rather than a lack of faults, it's difficult not to make comparisions with the flawed, inconsistent, yet impressive mixtape releases of other young rappers and Hip-Hop collectives (read: K Lamar, OF etc). The fact is, while there may be nothing here to really 'wow' with innovation, there's still 15 solid Hip-Hop tracks here and that's the real impressive feat. Yes mixtapes have been done before, but maybe, just maybe they've never been done this well and if that's not enough for people to stand up and take notice of Joey BADA$$ and Pro Era then I don't know what is.
'1999' is simple a no-brainer, 'get-it-right-now' FREE download, and an essential addition to any Hip-Hop fan's library....more than that...it might be the best mixtape you'll hear all year.

British house duo Bicep has just released deep house / garage crossover track in 'Feel It'. Pascäal - Lamborghini / Apollo

Fresh off the back of our post on Booddha, we've got word of another top release on the Amsterdam based VRESH label. This time, Texas based producer Peter Wiley aka Pascäal is rocking our headphones. Previously known for a large number of releases under his previous alias, Subvader, Pascäal is taking a new direction and a brand new start with his debut EP 'Lamborghini / Apollo '.
The two track EP doesn't disappoint, with the opener 'Lamborghini' really shining. This upbeat house roller takes a minimal, deep approach, complete with muffled synths, pitched vocal samples and a killer bass sure to give any raver their much needed fix. Meanwhile the second track 'Apollo' features a similar paced build, taking a smooth breaks infused garage tip. The spartan approach keeps the audio space and atmosphere large, whilst subtle use of appegiators and the deep rolling bassline give the track irrisistable groove appeal...'Apollo' truely is a track as at home on the dancefloor as it is at the post-party cotch/chillout.
All in all, 'Lamborghini / Apollo' is a top release and an excellent rebirth for Peter Wiley, who's sound has now taken on a shape somewhere between the depth of Booka Shade, and the vibrance of Jacques Greene. Check the EP after the jump and grab the complete FREE or Name Your Price download via the VRESH Bandcamp.

Booddha - Good Vibes

'Good Vibes' is probably one of the most accurately named tracks i've ever seen, with it's sweet housey piano licks and garage inspired rhythms providing plenty of uplifting audio pleasure. The production wizard behind this track is Amsterdam based Booddha, of whom 'Good Vibes' is just a small part of his impressive, bass orientated release back catalogue on the VRESH label.
You can grab the FREE download of 'Good Vibes' here, but be sure to check out the rest of FREE downloads as well as his two EPs 'She Was Lost' and 'Intense / Never Expected', both of which are Name Your Price releases.
With a keen ear for complex field sample work and solid production Booddha could easily be The Netherlands answer to Joy O or even Bashmore...regardless it won't be long his tracks start blowing up all over the scene.

Mutt - Conversations ft. Kevin King (Atlantic Connection Remix)

You might remember Atlantic Connection's DnB remix of Mos Def's 'Travelin' Man' which we featured a few weeks ago. Well Atlantic Connection has dropped another FREE remix, this time of fellow DnB producer Mutt's 'Conservations'. Atlantic Connection has taken the already stellar original track and stripped it back somewhat to the bare essentials, giving it a whole new minimal flavour and diverting all focus to that warm rolling bassline and Kevin King's soulful complimenting vocals. It's a subtle, yet bold change and it really works to give Mutt's original a whole new side.
Download the remix for FREE here...and while you're enjoying that little bit of soulfood, check out Atlantic Connection's Trap flavoured remix of Janet Jackson's 'Come Back to Me', streamable below and also available for FREE download.

Rubblebucket - Oversaturated EP

It's about time for some Indie Rock and this weeks contenders are Brooklyn based Rubblebucket, an interesting blend of psychedelic indie rock, upbeat dance, and radiant, left-field arrangements, all led by frontwoman Kalmia Traver and brassist Alex Toth.
Since their formation the band has evolved into something quite unique, with an exciting and unusual music direction, culminating in the bands latest release, the 'Oversaturated' EP, a chaotic, post-genre mix of dischord, horns, synth, guitars and harmonies, the audio equivalent of something between Björk and Tokyo Police Club.
To celebrate the EP's release, the band is giving away the title track '(Focus) Oversaturated' away for FREE here. Grab the download and check out the full EP stream below, available for purchase via iTunes.
Check the band's Soundcloud for more awesome FREE music, like the remixes of their 'Omega La La' album and a remix of Reptar's 'Houseboat Babies'...seems like there's big things ahead for these guys, watch this space.

Taches - Ålingsaäs

Im still not quite sure how I feel about Trap, but coming all the way from Senegal, I feel Taches take on it warrants a look in at least. There's not much to say about Taches (info on this mysterious producer is scarce to say the least), nevertheless his first release 'Ålingsaäs' speaks for itself, it's sensual, bassy release that leans on the edge of 2step whilst toying with that that Trap sound. It won't appeal to everyone, but I still recommend you check it out, after all it's a FREE download, so there's nothing to lose....embrace the Trap.

Figgy - Can't See / Don't Waste

You guys might remember New York based Figgy from the excellent 'Broke City Summer Collection' released over this past summer, featuring the likes of Sleepyhead, Dunes, and the man Figgy himself. Unlike previous releases,  his latest is as much about the visual as the audio.  'Can’t Say' and 'Don’t Waste' came about after Figgy was asked to compose the accompanying music to GOTM Films latest timelapse project. Safe to say, the two chilled out, serene, downtempo tracks fit perfectly with the beautiful images (check the final product here), but also stand on their own right as two wonderful pieces, sure to enduce many a keen listener into a sweet trance. If that sounds like your cuppa, then make sure you grab the FREE downloads via Facebook.

Warren Xclnce - Say Goodbye (Vampire Story) ft. Jordan James & Pheenix

Regular readers will all ready be familiar with London based Warren Xclnce, Hip-Hop/Bass producer extraordinaire and HotBox favourite. He has recently re-released his track 'Say Goodbye', this time complete with vocals courtesy of collaborators Jordan James & Pheenix. As we've come to expect from Warren, the Dilla-esque production on this track is absolutely stellar with Jordan James' slightly off-key vocals and Pheenix's rhymes nicely complimenting the instrumental.
The track is set for release as part of Warren's forthcoming 'Changes' EP, but in the meantime you can enjoy the preview below and the FREE download here WANT MORE? Then follow The HotBox on Facebook and Twitter

Hanga - Drought

It's amazing just what kind of stuff has emerged and continues to come out of the bedroom DJ/producer generation....perhaps the most incredible thing is the speed and youth factor. Take UK based Hanga aka Caleb Watson, at just 16 years old this guy is producing music with the maturity and production values to rival many a seasoned producer. His latest track 'Drought', which samples Moby's 'Go', is a gripping, grooved up vibe with exactly the kind of dark bass and 2step rhythms many of us were first loving back in the late 90s. Yet years later up and comer Hanga is hitting it spot on, proof surely that Garage-vibes can get into your blood even as a toddler.
Check the track after the jump and grab the FREE download here....be sure to turn that sub up, this one's a window shaker and a sign of big things to come from Hanga. WANT MORE? Then follow The HotBox on Facebook and Twitter

DE$iGNATED x Christopherson - It's Not Right

It's hard to sum up DE$iGNATED's style in words, but one things for sure, these two young brits are making some seriously interesting and exciting music. The lads describe themselves as "fusing genres that they like", a statement that seems a fairly accurate, especially in regards to their latest release, 'It's Not Right'. This track firmly embraces the idea of blending genres, beginning with a simple, but classic Whitney Houston sample, and ending in so much more. There's a little Trap, a little Garage, House and of course a great deal of leaning toward the bassier end of the sonic spectrum. But still, there's no one grouping that this steel drum, soul and bass infused electronic experiment will fit into.....and perhaps that's the point. All past inspirations aside, these lads are making music, experimenting and scoping for the future and at this rate and such a young age, it seems like we've got plenty more to look forward to from DE$iGNATED.

Ed Congreave - Heal

Ed Congreave is best known for being part of Oxford Indie band Foals. In between working on their upcoming 3rd album he's been honing his own production skills, taking his knowledge of electronic music and some clear Deep House inflences to create his first solo release, 'Heal'.
Though it may only be his first solo foray in electronic music, Ed's experience as a musician is clear in 'Heal'; production values are high, the sound is crisp and the pitched vocal lead melody works in tandem with plenty of warm bass to give the track a fine groove factor...akin to classic Chicago House artists of old.
Overall this is a very accomplished release, with 'Heal' already becoming one of favourite House tracks in recent times (no surprise though, we are huge Foals fans).
'Heal' is set for release on vinyl via released via the new DEEP SHIT label, co owned by Ed himself and Jack Savidge of Friendly Fires. Check the track as well as the A1 Bassline refix below, both of which are available for FREE download here and here. We reckon this is the start of a seriously promising solo production career for Ed, and DEEP SHIT is one to watch for sure.

Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love (Negativ Remix)

Those Negativ boys are back with another jam, taking Leona Lewis' 'Bleeding Love' and molding it into something twisted and beautiful. The end result is a easy rolling House track, with deceptively dark, off-key tones and all the 4x4 loving any dancefloor will ever need. It takes some serious talent to make Leona samples sound that good, god knows I never thought I'd see the day where her name made it to the HotBox, is there nothing these polish production wizards can't do?
